Sunday Tour — it takes one hour to go around the island
Weekly tour around the island, as a cat daily checking all its territory. It takes an hour to complete the journey by car, non-stop. But how to bring the island with me when leaving? What is the portrait of an island? How to portray an island? Landscape as portrait/self-portrait — vanitas? Quite immediately: what do I see from the car window, when I go on this tour? Subsequently, which is Faial's landscape, what characterizes it? Why is this island beautiful and what makes it special? How does this landscape change, depending on the light and weather? And, ultimately, what is landscape — what is a landscape?
The landscape of the island, without filters, not searching for the 'right' frames, captured on two sequences of images obtained in continuum, photographically captured during the journey, by car, around Faial, always by the regional road, showing, in the 'left window', the 'land side' (misty day), and in the 'right window', the 'sea side' (sunny day). Searching the island's portrait.
These images were captured in an attempt to photograph neutrally, registering without selection or prejudice. Their single criterion is the machine’s velocity: the shutter button pressed as quickly as the machine permits, between one photograph and the next. There actually is a post-selection, but not in the act of registering the light. This post-selection aims to eliminate some repetition of images and cope with the need to arrive at a smaller number of images, viewable in a short time — after all, it only takes six minutes to go around the island.
